corporate outplacement
Termination of an employee has always presented an unpleasant challenge
to the employer, a challenge with multiple considerations and multiple
ramifications. Corporations have sought to eliminate as much unpleasantness
and risk in this necessary event as possible. Enter the Outplacement
Consultant. The outplacement consultant is the specialist versed in training
the employer in the process of severing an employee's relationship with the
corporation, and in assisting the outgoing employee (the candidate) in
effectively working through the process, through his or her emotions and
through preparations for finding new jobs or career opportunities.
In 1966, the Great Bull market faltered, mirroring the problems of the economy
and American business. Large corporations which had prospered and grown for
twenty years supported a now overextended labor force. Expenses would have
to be reduced, and the practice of terminating employees wholesale began in
the 1960's, first in small numbers and, more recently, by the hundreds and
sometimes thousands.
A service entitled Outplacement Consulting, a natural development from the
specialized fields of industrial psychology, management development, training
and all-around human resources consulting evolved out of the need for outside
professional advisors to inform managers on the effective handling of employee
termination and on the need to help the out-going employee get organized for a
job search.
The original outplacement corporation first invested in outplacement consulting
as a courtesy to senior executives in the late 1960's and early 1970's. But the
candidate of the late 1970's and 1980's has become the salaried employee.
Massive layoffs and mergers have introduced this new breed of candidate.
Kammer & Associates specializes in that market, addressing the on-going
demand for assistance with corporate change.
